My wife and I recently took a six-day Pacific Coast bicycle camping trip, beginning in Oregon and ending in Northern California.

While our original aim was to be on the road for two-weeks, we returned home earlier than planned.   From that point I ventured east on a two-day solo trip.  I rode the bike very hard both those days, including a 20-mile stretch on an unpaved, gravel path.

While the CETMA Cargo bike isn’t what you might consider a normal touring bike, I found its unique abilities made it a useful vehicle for such travel.

The bike’s ability to handle the weight and bulk is obvious, but the real benefit was having a single cargo space to throw everything into (as opposed to several smaller panniers).  I bought an enormous water-proof duffel bag which fit the platform perfectly, replacing several racks and panniers we’d need otherwise.

The bike’s center-stand made it easy to prop the bike anywhere without having to lean it against something.  While it wasn’t a huge deal, this feature was great for keeping our bikes within eyesight, or keeping them near our tent while camping.  The center-stand also held the bike stable while I rummaged through to pack/unpack.

If you’re curious, I found 9-speeds to be adequate.  I use a single 38-tooth chain-ring and an 11-34 cassette with 175mm cranks.  I didn’t feel a need for anything else, although to be fair, we didn’t do a whole lot of steep climbing.

I was comfortable riding all day.  My Brooks saddle was comfy and my overall position in the frame didn’t present any physical problems for me.  My upper body felt balanced.  I was able climb hills standing up normally and pedal steadily on flat ground without feeling hunched over.

My new Jeff Jones cut H-bars were absolutely perfect.  Their shape and numerous hand positions were just right where I wanted them.  Highly recommended.

I intend to use my Margo for touring again soon and plan to continue experimenting with this concept.  CETMA camping bike—I like the sound of it.
